Interesting Notes:

Torenia is a compact, mounding annual and tender perennial. These plants are upright and bushy, typically with bright to dark green and, in some cases, red-hued leaves. These plants originate from tropical and subtropical Asia, Africa, and the Americas. They naturally inhabit forests and many exist at high altitudes. Torenia flowers are variable and most are showy, with tubular, bilateral blossoms that have three lower petals and two upper petals. Many have a wishbone-like structure inside comprised of two stamens that arch and come together. The flowers, which appear as tiny trumpets, range in color from pink, blue, purple, and white.

Both the Catalina and Summer Wave Series of Torenia are bred by Proven Winners, is commonly used for ground coverage, as a border crop, or in shade gardens. The taller and fuller varieties go nicely as mixed fillers in the garden. Torenia grow best in moist, fertile, well-drained soil, and is a full shade to partial sun exposure flower. A unique feature of Torenia is their profuse flowering, which makes for a full, lush garden. Torenia will continuously bloom all season long. Key features of this variety include heat and shade tolerance, deer resistance, and no deadheading required.

Growing Tips for Homeowners:

As with every plant purchase, it is important to look for quality at the start! During the purchasing process, be sure to avoid plants that look exhausted or appear to be wilting. Finding a fresh young plant, without dying foliage or flowers is very important. Look for rich vibrant green or red-hued foliage as indication of the plant's care thus far. This will ensure an easy start for you, and a long life for your plant.

After locating and purchasing a quality plant at the store, it is important to find the perfect place for it at your home. The best time for planting your plant is mid-spring or early summer, after the threat of frost has passed. Be careful not to take your plant outside too early in the spring. Torenia will last from late spring, through the summer, until the finish of fall. They are good pioneer plants in the garden, until other plants become more established.

Torenia is a low maintenance plant that is shade tolerant. Water application a few times a week is necessary, and fertilizer or compost application is recommended to ensure optimal plant performance. Be sure to apply low to the ground, near the plant’s main stem, avoiding wetting the plant’s foliage, for quick absorption and utilization. Torenia must be well drained. It is important to ensure good drainage in both containers and landscaping, to prevent diseases like root rot. Drainage holes, elevated flower gardens, and proper soil composition are three great ways to prevent root rot and help your plants maintain a healthy moisture level.

Preparing the ground for your plants is always an important key to maintaining healthy plants. Pests like slugs and snails are attracted to the environment created in flower gardens and landscaping. Prevention of these types of pests includes clearing the area of holes where such pests can live. Aphids and thrips may also pose a threat to your Torenia, but are usually taken care of by predator insects. These tiny pests usually hide on the underside of leaves and are difficult to see because of their small size.

Torenia flowers are attractive hummingbirds, adding a touch of beauty to your garden while promoting pollination and plant growth.
