Petunia is a semi-trailing to trailing annual and tender perennial. Classic petunias are a garden standby. These sunny, heat-loving flowers, originating in North, Central, and South America, were one of the first ornamentals to be hybridized. Petunia flowers all have a similar form and come in a wide array of colors. Their blooms are normally funnel-shaped with either radial or bi-lateral symmetry. Bi-colored flowers, either striped or edged in contrasting colors, are also common in Petunias. All Petunias have medium to fine, green leaves and stems that are sticky to the touch and strongly scented. Some plants have broad, spreading habits while others have a more mounding nature. Petunias are beautiful and easy to grow.
Varieties with a trailing habit are especially beautiful spilling over in hanging baskets and window boxes. Mounding varieties work well as the centerpiece of large potted combinations on the patio. Feature them with a trailing vine or ornamental grass for a more dynamic combo. Taller and fuller varieties go nicely as mixed fillers in the garden. Petunias grow best in moist, fertile, well-drained soil, and are a full to partial sun exposure flower. A unique feature of petunias is that they have sticky stems and have are strongly scented. Petunias will continuously bloom all season long. Key features of this variety are heat, frost, and drought tolerance, no deadheading required, and pleasant fragrance.
