Common Name: Pansy 'Matrix Rose Blotch'
Pansy 'Matrix Rose Blotch'
Pansy’s are the most sold flower in the world. There are two main types of pansy’s, clear or pure & faced or blotch. A pansy with a face/blotch, features a dark blotch in the center of the flower. Pansy’s are available in an amazing array of colors, can overwinter in many areas if they had time to develop a good footing and are easy to grow, rarely having any diseases or insect problems. Matrix Rose Blotch exhibits Light Rose to Rose blotch shades and can contain a small number of Cream blooms with a Rose cap. The Matrix Series features superior branching to go along with uniform flowering & habit among all Matrix varieties. The large 3 inch Matrix flowers are held on short, strong peduncles that help keep them from flopping over.
Homeowner Growing & Maintenance Tips
Best planted when soil temps are between 45-70 degrees and in a raised bed for good drainage. Pansy’s planted when soil temps are below 45 will be stunted exhibiting little growth or flowering. Plant 6 to 10 inches apart in full of part sun. Water thoroughly for the first time 5 days after planting and then it is best that they receive a thorough watering once or twice a week and feed once every two weeks. Regular dead heading of faded blooms can extend & increase blooming. Surrounding, with approx 2 inches of mulch will help conserve water and protect against the cold. The Matrix Series exhibits great heat tolerance though all pansy’s will begin to decline as the days heat up. Be careful, deer love pansy’s!
Interesting Notes
The name pansy is derived from the French word pensee’ meaning “thought”, and was so named because the blotched flower resembles a human face. Because of this the pansy has long been a symbol of freethought. Pansy flowers are edible and when temps drop below 25 degrees their foliage will wilt & turn a grey-green as a defense from the cold.
